Information is the lifeblood of every business. Whether its used to store names, addresses, invoices or stock performance, any mismanagement of information can lead to disastrous results anything including losing track of all your customers, location of stock or even money owed to your company.

This is why a database is critical to any company. It allows company to hold records of all their important information.

Many companies host their databases on computers which are operated, controlled and maintained on their own premises.

But what happens if they have contractors and employees out in the field or on the road?

What if they sign up a new customer, make a record of the time they spent with a client or on a job site? They could ring up someone and tell them on the phone to enter it into the database, but this takes up time from two people and is a waste of resources.

This is where web based databases come in handy. An employee can log onto the company website into a secure area and gain access to the database via the web. This will allow them to directly enter the information without having to take up someone else’s time by calling them up and repeating the information down the phone.

The interface on these databases are usually controlled by a web based application, such as mysql or oracle which allows users to log in and make new entries or edit existing information into the database via the web.

Allowing employees to use web database applications also cuts down on travel time to and from the office to enter information.
